Te Matai Road Bore Pump Solar System

Client: Jim Robertson
Completion Date: January 2024
Location: Te Matai Road, Te Puke
Duration: 2 weeks

Background

The Robertson family has been a valued client of Dobsons for over 20 years. During this time, we have supported them across a wide range of projects, including coolstore and packhouse maintenance, greenhouse power management, and domestic air conditioning installations. This long-standing relationship highlights the trust and reliability that Jim Robertson and his family place in Dobsons for their diverse needs.

Situation

Jim Robertson operated a water bore pump used to irrigate a large area of commercial orchard trees, including Feijoas. However, the high usage of the pump resulted in substantial power bills. Recognizing an opportunity to reduce these costs, Jim sought a solar solution that could offset the energy expenses associated with running the bore pump.

Objectives

The primary goals for this project were to:

  1. Install a solar system capable of running Jim’s three-phase bore pump.

  2. Modify the operation of the bore pump and related components so they would predominantly operate when the solar system was generating electricity, maximizing energy efficiency and cost savings.

Strategy & Approach

To achieve these goals, Dobsons collaborated with an external design company that was brought in to specify the type of solar system required. The design team met onsite with Dobsons and Jim to discuss the project, including the best location for the solar panels and the necessary clearing of trees and bush to ensure optimal solar exposure. Together, they outlined what the final results could look like and how the system would function.

Key Stakeholders

The project involved coordination with several key stakeholders:

  • JA Russells Solar Team: Worked alongside Dobsons to design and specify the solar system.

  • PowerCo: Engaged to facilitate feeding any surplus power generated by the solar system back into the electricity grid.

  • EIS (Electrical Inspection Services): Contracted as PowerCo-approved inspectors to carry out the necessary metering works and ensure compliance with all regulations.

Outcome

The project was successfully completed within the two-week timeframe, resulting in a solar system that effectively powers Jim's three-phase bore pump. By synchronizing the pump's operation with solar energy generation, the system significantly reduced Jim’s electricity costs. Additionally, the ability to feed surplus power back into the grid provided further financial benefits. Jim Robertson was highly satisfied with the outcome, reinforcing his long-standing relationship with Dobsons and demonstrating our commitment to innovative, cost-effective solutions.
