New Classroom Construction at Papamoa College
Client: Stead Construction
Completion Date: June 2024
Location: Papamoa College
Duration: 24 months
Background
This project marked the beginning of Dobsons' relationship with Stead Construction, a new client at the time. Sandy, Dobsons' Sales Manager, had previously collaborated with Stead at another company and facilitated a chance meeting between Dobsons and Stead onsite at Papamoa College. This introduction led to Dobsons being invited to bid on our first project with Stead, specifically for Blocks 4 and 6. Our successful bid not only secured this project but also led to further collaborations on multiple projects, including work at Rotorua Boys High, Tongariro School, Cable Price in Auckland, and additional projects at Papamoa College.
Situation
Stead Construction was reportedly dissatisfied with their existing electrical service provider. By a fortunate coincidence, Dobsons was introduced at the right time, offering a fresh opportunity to meet Stead's electrical needs.
Objectives
The project's initial goals were guided by plans and specifications provided by an architect, as it was a "design-build" project. This setup meant that Stead Construction held significant authority over the project, allowing for flexibility in making adjustments. As issues arose onsite, Dobsons had the ability to propose changes in layouts, locations, and products, with Stead’s approval. This collaborative approach ensured a higher-quality finished product that met the evolving needs of the project.
Strategy & Approach
Dobsons' primary interaction throughout the project was with Stead Construction and their team of employees and subcontractors. We maintained close communication with Stead to address any onsite issues promptly and efficiently, ensuring that any necessary changes were implemented smoothly. Additionally, we worked alongside the architects at 22 Degrees when major changes to the plans were proposed, ensuring that all modifications aligned with the overall project design and objectives.
Key Stakeholders
The key stakeholders in this project included:
-
Stead Construction: The primary client, responsible for overseeing the project and approving any changes.
-
MOAA Architects: The architectural firm involved in the project, consulted when significant design changes were necessary.
-
22 Degrees: The mechanical and electrical engineers.
-
Dobsons: Responsible for the electrical work, collaborating closely with Stead and the architects to ensure project success.
Outcome
The new classroom project at Papamoa College was completed over a 24-month period, resulting in a well-executed build that met the client’s expectations. The flexibility of the design-build approach allowed Dobsons to adapt to onsite challenges, contributing to a superior final product. The success of this project solidified the relationship between Dobsons and Stead Construction, leading to further collaborations on a variety of projects across different locations.
