What Is The Solar On Schools Programme?
The Solar on Schools initiative is a Government-backed programme delivered by the Ministry of Education and EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority).
Its goal is to support hundreds of schools across New Zealand with the installation of solar energy systems - including panels, and in some cases battery storage over the next few years.
The programme is expected to roll out in stages, with an initial group of schools selected first, followed by further phases through to 2028.
For schools, this represents a significant opportunity to reduce long-term power costs while also contributing to sustainability goals and providing real world learning opportunities for students.

What We Know So Far
While full details are still being confirmed, here's what has been announced. The programme was introduced as part of Budget 2026 with around $40 million being allocated. There are up to 500 schools that are expected to benefit over time with a rollout happening in stages through to approximately 2028 with an initial group of schools being selected in the first phase.
At this stage, the exact process for how schools are chosen and when applications or expressions of interest may open, is still being clarified . As more information becomes available, we recommend schools stay informed and begin early conversations around their energy use and future needs.
